Alternative rockers Windsor Oaks Band have released their sophomore album, “Take a Chance,” produced by Steven Haigler (Pixies, Fuel, Brand New, Clutch) at VuDu Studios in New York. The Raleigh-based band has been writing, recording and touring all over the East Coast for over three years. With the help of college radio spins and a growing online presence, Windsor Oaks Band has cemented their status as one of North Carolina’s most promising up-and-comers.
“Take a Chance,” reawakened in me a sense that true alternative rock music was still alive. In an era of sickly sweet pop delivered by boy bands and teen princesses, it is on this music that I hang my hopes for rock. This is an album with a sound that you would expect from a seasoned band, not a relatively newcomer.
It’s an incredible mix with many absolute gems. The first video and single,“‘Touch The Sky” is no fluke, and this is confirmed by listening to the other great cuts such as “Running Out Of Time,” “Crazy Chance,” “Right Situation (The Demon),” “Taking A Ride,” “One In A City” and “Pick Me Up”. It seems as though the Windsor Oaks Band is destined for greatness with their brand of poetry and rock guitars. This is music with heart and soul and you can feel it when you listen to it. Shane Smith’s voice has a unique quality to it, unmistakable, soothing, and rough at the same time, it creates an almost hypnotizing effect. I really can’t imagine anyone not liking this album; honestly, it is a collection of 8 incredibly good songs.

Few songs can truly reach out and grab you from the first listen, but almost every song on this album did just that to me. It’s impossible to resist these heartfelt melodies with unbelievable vocals. The crunching power of Creed and the forceful melodies of Matchbox Twenty pervade the sound of the Windsor Oaks Band all across the album, making it, instantly appealing to first time listeners.
This band will slip into your mind when you’re not looking and grabs what it finds there to incorporate into their music. Why else could these songs seem if they were written for the soundtrack of your life? The Windsor Oaks Band sound as if they have been able to tap into everything that goes with human existence: all the emotions and events and people; they seem to have taken all that and tossed in some wonderfully arranged music, from edgy rock to soulful ballads, that’s eclectic, interesting and very powerfully real.
This band is worth every second of your time and every cent in your wallet. And the album “Take a Chance,” is just that good. Grab it and give it a listen.
