We Steal Flyers: “Applecart” – The beauty in their music lies within the duo’s melodic skills!

We Steal Flyers are made up of two charismatic Northumbrians, Shaggy & Derek! They are an acoustic duo of songwriters who travel and perform across UK, Europe & America. Their live sound is two guitars and two voices full of harmony and fun. The new album “Applecart” is out on 6th May 2016 and already We Steal Flyers have an impressively busy schedule ahead for their supporting tour.

This is the kind of music that I suppose is called Neo-Folk, but is really less categorizable than that. The vocals are amazing, the tempos are often the kind that make you want to move your feet, or cuddle up in a corner and mope to, while the feel of the album is old-but-new, if you catch my meaning – its classic. Considering that this type of retro roots music has found its way back into the hearts and minds of music fans worldwide, I am surprised that We Steal Flyers are not way more successful than they seem to be so far, but I suspect that they will be.

Let’s get something straight here. This band isn’t re-inventing the wheel or anything like that, but let’s face it, they are showing us exactly how, and why it was made in the first place. As consumers, our souls are hungry for music with meaning. We’ve been hungry for something different for a while now, and this sound is just what we need. With that said, I personally believe We Steal Flyers are one of the most talented front-runners of the neo-acoustic movement.

It’s simple. The beauty in their music lies within the duo’s songwriting/melodic skills. Honestly, when I first heard the track “Applecart”, I was thinking to myself, “great, here we go again…another band that has a nice little jingle – aka one hit wonder, that won’t be around tomorrow.” But, after reading the lyrics and listening to the entire album, I was very much impressed with the raw approach of how they make their music so emotional and cinematic, with songwriting skills on par with some of the legendary singer-songwriters from the past. After listening to the album all the way through at least 10 times, I feel like I really got onto the same wavelength as We Steal Flyers.

The question is, do you like good music? Do you like acoustic guitar? Do you like music that is emotionally affecting? Do you like songs that are so catchy that you’ll be singing them for days? If so, then start putting your money away to buy this album! We Steal Flyers have really put something special together here. They purposely set out to make an album that is enjoyable, and makes no pretenses about being anything more than just damn good music. There’s nothing too complicated about the songs, and half of them sound like they could have been recorded during a live show in an intimate coffee shop. That’s the real charm of it though. It’s real, and right there. I just love it!

Let your soul feed on songs like “Get Well Soon”, “English Tea (Song for Grandad)”, “Its Raining, Its Pouring”, “I Love You” and “Sailorman”, or uplift your heart with “Applecart”, “Time Flies” and “Hey Ho”. All through this album proves to be a really refreshing change from the current stack of artists that put out overproduced songs with loads of samples and loops. It’s like We Steal Flyers is saying to the rest of the world “hey man, you don’t need to do all that. Just make music”. This is truly one of the best finds for 2016 so far!
