Redondo Beach, California, pop-rock singer-songwriter, Tyler Colt, is a multi-faceted artist who plays the guitar, bass, and drums. Colt started out taking guitar lessons at five years old, and has credited his mentor and guitar teacher Monte Pittman — most famously known as Madonna’s guitarist — for bringing his musical passion to the forefront of his journey.
Now only seventeen, Tyler released his first song via iTunes, when he was just 15 years old. Tyler’s newest single and recently released music video, ‘Come Home,’ is a fun song, upbeat song. “I wanted people to feel good when they listened to the song,” says Tyler. “It should get you in a great mood and pumped up.”
‘Come Home’ is a superb alt pop-rock single, revealing an artist with a multitude of musical talents, demonstrating that he can produce a pounding rocker, that is both clever and catchy with uplifting lyrics, and variable pop musical textures, well-crafted and well-performed enough for any Top 40 radio station.
The young can appreciate the honest lyrics and the power of the song, while the older among us who may not be blasting this track in their stereos, can appreciate the great melodic structures of the song.
The one cohesive bond that ties the whole project together is the strength and clarity of Tyler Colt’s voice. This is a voice that is still young and forming it’s distinguishing characteristics, but already able to display raw power and expressiveness. When Tyler sings: “You pulled me in right from the start. You held the key. Every beat of my heart was yours,” it doesn’t sound like it’s a hard process, but rather, something he is enjoying.
You will enjoy Tyler’s strong sense of melody and thoughtful lyric crafting. He has a way of making clean, straightforward, and the most simple of lyrics sound unexpected. All-round, the song writing is great and doesn’t come across as forced or cheesy.
Tyler Colt is still a teenager, but he avoids most of the usual youthful trappings in his music. He reminded me that alternative music can be fun and does not always have to be burdened by overstated angst or political and social commentaries. Tyler seems to shine brighter when he puts a harder edge on the song.
It’s here that the vocals are complemented well by the power chord driven guitar and steady drum backbone. Moving ahead, I would expect Tyler Colt to steer himself closer to a more gritty rock sound, at which time no doubt, this young fellow will prove that he is going to make his mark on the music world.
