In the context of this jazz duet the contrasts between Tom Greer and Sarah Wade are interesting: He stays powerful and straightforward in his delivery, while she sometimes flirts with her voice adopting a coy affectation that’s never overpowering or obnoxious.
Their voices complement each other and mesh together almost seamlessly, and, it’s hard not to smile at the perfectly executed harmony. No matter your age or music preferences you have to love this track. The chemistry, talent and professionalism of Greer along with Wade’s talent is a must.
“Say It” by Tom Greer and Sarah Wade is an evocation of a long-vanished era, a celebration of classic American songwriting and a reaffirmation that some tunes transcend changing times and fashions. When the two sing, you can fully savor the artistic bond that links these artists.
For singers do not shape phrases, contrast tone colors and anticipate each other’s gestures with this degree of spontaneity and freedom unless they instinctively trust each other. Greer and Wade aren’t trying to sing exactly in sync or nail downbeats at precisely the same instant. Instead, they aspire to capture the exuberance of Tom Greer’s song, each in their own way.
All the while they are supported by a big band beat vigorously feeding the song’s flamboyant arrangement, upon which the duo zestfully, provide a showbiz performance of the kind you hardly here on modern records anymore. Tom Greer and Sarah Wade trade phrases with abandon, riding the rhythms of the hard-charging big band and generally basking in the pleasures of each other’s company.
The Story Behind The Song: Tom Greer and Sarah Wade have enjoyed successful solo careers, performing in several regional bands in and around Oklahoma. Both have diverse musical backgrounds, with Tom focusing on education, teaching voice and composition, while Sarah honed her musical chops performing in plays, choir and as a member of the internationally successful “Sweet Adelines” vocal ensemble. Both ran in the same musical circles and both performed with the local touring band, “Broken Spoke” led by band leader – Big Mike Griffin which backed up one of country music’s most successful male artists, Johnny Rodriguez, who recorded a string of number 1 country hits during his career.
After hearing Sarah perform “God Bless The Child” at the Charlie Christain International Music Festival. Tom asked Sarah to record his song “Say It” which was currently in production and due to be released by Star 1 Records, an independent label in California. After the labels managing director, Laura Patterson heard both versions of the song featuring Tom’s vocals with the other with Sarah’s, it was suggested that the song would really shine featuring both of their vocals as a duet.
