The Karmens are an indie/pop outfit hailing from Melbourne, Australia. Originally high school and work mates, Chris, Andrew, Alex and Christian fused together in the summer of 2012/2013 to create the band with a combined desire to make fun and accessible music for all to enjoy. Their music is a collection of different emotions through unforgettable melodies and entrancing lyrics, drawing similarities to the likes of The Temper Trap & Gold Fields. 2013 has seen The Karmens play all across Melbourne, as well as tour through regional Victoria as part of the Bill Parton Trio/Artist Proof/Nathan Leigh Jones National Tour.
While waiting for their Ep release which is set for November, The Karmens have released their single, “Lights”. This single is pure shining pop genius from a band with a unique and creative sound, a gift that the American public is starved for in these vapid, manufactured-music times. The band prove that a simple guitar riff can be much more exciting than one filled with all sorts of effects. Add a strong and independent bass together with crisp drums and crystalline vocals, and there you go: one of the catchiest indie pop bands to show up in a number of years.
The Karmens’ sound is sharp; the vocals are grand and the song interesting. My first listen was in the car on the way home from work and I honestly sat in the driveway to replay the song a couple of times before turning off the engine! These guys artfully combine new and old with some great hooks.

“Lights”. has a slight 80’s new-wave/punk/ska influence and catchy lyrics that make you want to rock out on the first listen. Chris – (Vocals, Keys, Guitar), Andrew – (Guitar, Vocals), Christian – (Bass, Vocals) and Alex – (Drums, Vocals) are what makes this band so distinct. They play it simple and they play it straight but with great creative subtlety.
The Karmens are a blast of fresh natural energy that rips and roars from the very beginning. Their single “Lights “ is a single with good songs and music from a bunch of ordinary guys. The singing is so natural and spontaneous. The band is original in its own way. The musicianship is top-notch with exciting guitar riffs, meaningful bass lines, lovely vocals and good drumming. And this is only the single…can’t wait for the Ep release to see how far these guys can take it!
