Saure Gurken: “上” – has a knack for fusing fury with sensitivity!

South Korean experimental rock band Saure Gurken was formed by veteran musicians and songwriters Vance Baryn and Quaziq. They were later joined by Drummer Josh King. It has often been said that this band’s unique genre-defying sound is one of a kind in the Korean music scene.

Saure Gurken is anything but a single-minded musical outfit. They deliver an astounding fusion of unhinged power, ear grasping melodies, stimulating lyrics and the ability to reach audiences in both underground and mainstream circles (if they wanted to). This is what I was looking for, to the letter. As soon as your media-player begins playing the songs, you’re thrown into the music and could lose yourself in it very fast. I sure did. On their EP they have broken boundaries, crossed genres and redefined the rock rules.

Saure-Gurken-logoIf you’re truly looking for something different from a rock band, tracks like the avant-garde and experimental “After the Reign” sound like nothing you’ve ever heard before, while “It’s True” and “Murder Head” veer off in unexpected directions. Their style is different from most rock bands you usually hear on TV or the radio, plus every song packs a different punch.

Saure Gurken rise to bridge the gap between genres with a fresh ear and a knack for fusing fury with sensitivity. From opening to closing, has every factor that contributes to the making of a great EP. It carries great dynamics, going from lullabies to fits of emotional rage…in the same song!

It has some very interesting surprises, including odd tempos and tempo changes, and some well-placed guitar riffs and solos. The passionate vocal deliveries and the hardcore raw sound are all components that make this EP excellent too.

Saure Gurken is one of those bands that will always fly under the radar, due to their eclectic experimental style. But then, as we reviewers already know, the most interesting music is found under, and around the radar…and never on mainstream radio!

Nothing should be missed on this EP; the quick-fire guitar riffs and riot inducing vocals, the driving rhythms, the unexpected harmonic vocal interludes together with the smooth melodic patches introduced sporadically. If you’re itching for something new, energetic, challenging and technically superb; then look no further than Saure Gurken and their EP!
