Plastic Barricades: “Shine!” is Bound to Resonate with Listeners!

Indie trio Plastic Barricades, who are represented by Trole Records have a fresh new single “Shine!” out now. According to the band, the song is an ode to self-improvement and taking chances in the world where it is very easy to get lost. Romantic and honest, gloomy and curious, melodic and melancholic, Plastic Barricades chronicle life in the troubled yet fascinating XXI century with painstaking sincerity, asking questions and trying to find the answers. Inspired and influenced by Radiohead, Oasis, Coldplay, Muse, Keane,  Razorlight, Nirvana and many others, the trio loves to experiment with styles, sound and approach.

The band Plastic Barricades, originally conceived in Tallinn, Estonia in 2007, and whose album, “Tree of Ideas”, we reviewed not so long ago, are based in North-West London, and consist of Dan Kert on guitar, keyboards and vocals, Daniele Borgato on bass and Frazer Webster on drums.

No “Shine!” is bound to resonate with listeners. It’s warm and inviting, densely layered with harmonies, and beautifully soothing. On this single The band further develop their melancholic pop sound in favor of even warmer instrumentation, and a more intimate melody.

Like the last album though, once again this song deceives to believe that it is simply constructed, but there is a complexity that unravels over time as it exudes its tender and grey apathy. There is, however, a more mysterious element beneath the calming ebb and flow of this single, that is harder to pinpoint. Something lurks beneath the radiant surface that may or may not become apparent after multiple listens. I’m still searching, but I know it’s there…somewhere.

Plastic Barricades don’t overwhelm you with their creativity but offer it in dabs and strokes like an artist and his brush. More than sounds, they create moods, which are even harder to resist. “Shine!” is another confirmation that more cutting edge material is to follow from these highly talented musicians.

One other thing that impresses me about Plastic Barricades’ approach is that they don’t only pay tribute in subtle ways to important musicians that came before them, like the beautiful chords and rhythms of years gone by, but they demonstrate that they can be improved upon, played with more dynamism, sensitivity, and courage.

“Shine!” is more about emotion and feelings than just about ideas. A very beautiful work indeed!

Upcoming gigs before the UK Tour (July-August) include „Shine!” single launch extravaganza at Proud Camden (5.04.14, London), Blur’s „Parklife” 20th anniversary party at O2 Academy Islington (26.04.14, London), opening the festival season at Cosmic Puffin 2014 (3.05.14, Mersey Island) and launching the EP at Old Queen’s Head (12.06.14, London).
