Minor Sounds is a dark folk/electronic project. “The Humming” comes from Brighton based singer/songwriter Mirna Stanich who moved to the UK after finishing University in Croatia and Warsaw based producer Martin Zietek who comes from the Warsaw underground scene, having played in an electronic band called Elektrolot.
The album was recorded in a few living rooms in Brighton and Martin’s home studio in a village near Warsaw, bouncing tracks back and forth between them. The recordings were made between 2009 and 2012.
The title track of the album “The Humming” has been featured on Fat Cat Records Demo Compilation 2012 and received many plays on BBC Introducing: The South and recently on BBC Radio 6 Music.
The songs on the album follow the trials and tribulations of Mirna’s first few years abroad.
Through collaboration with Martin, whom she met in Brighton UK in 2008, she took a different turn musically and started incorporating electronics and producing her own music.
Martin has also done music for theatres, documentaries and produced for various bands in Warsaw, as well as Minor Sounds.

Minor Sounds’ atmospheric album, “The Humming”, is soul music in the truest sense of the word, a journey into the heart of darkness and light which leaves you emotionally exhausted and bewildered, but ultimately intoxicated. Mirna Stanic’s voice is white crystal refracted through a shattered psyche: at times pure, resonant and beautiful, at others desperate and broody, bordering on depression. The music is often asphyxiating, the power of the bass seeping into the marrow of your bones, while the back beats gently but relentlessly explore the sound of disintegrating boundaries.
“The Humming” showcases ten inspiring tracks where Mirna Stanic’s soft and delicate vocals (reminiscent of Dido meets Sade) gently guide the songs along their respective paths into infinity. But the Croatian artist’s contribution to the album goes way over and above, as she plays both electric and acoustic guitar, piano, synths, organ, banjo and even handles some beats.
Polish born Martin Zietek perfectly completes the duo, by yielding his skills on bass, electric guitars, electronics, moog, beats and backing vocals.
It is hard to choose absolute highlights on a generally skillful production. However, “Different Kind,” “Three Legged Dog,” “Hailstorm,” “Gravity” and the title track, “The Humming,” reach near-excellence.
But each song has tiny little details that moves it up one notch, while the emotional range on this album is significant.
“The Humming” sits somewhere between Morcheeba and Massive Attack and combines superb hooks with pulsating rhythms and incredible vocals.
If you like smart music, sounds that inspire emotion and thought, get this album. You’ll be in a new multi layered, multicolored world when you press play.
