Lukas Gadelha writes songs about love, life, loneliness and the future. His latest album was recorded in São Paulo, Brazil (his homeland). “These ten songs are also a record of me, my fear of fading into the streets of a big city like São Paulo”. In 2014, he moved to Vancouver, Canada.
Lukas Gadelha’s 10-track album, “What are you waiting for?” is inspiring in every way – musically, lyrically, melodically, harmonically and rhythmically. The list of Gadelha’s musical and lyrical talents is much too long for a brief review. He brings a new and wonderfully fresh style to contemporary folk-influenced music. Especially since the music on this album is exceptionally broader and deeper than what most mean by the terms “folk”, “acoustic” or “pop”.
This album is one pleasant surprise after another. There is not one song I would consider skipping over when I listen to this album. I do have my favorites: “What Are You Waiting For”, “Roller Coaster”, “Won’t Change”, “Love Is Not For Sale”, “Ever Be Found” and “Not That” – in no particular order. However all of the songs are supremely enjoyable and interesting.
Even on the first listen the songs gelled with me and I felt I knew the words before I had even heard them. The acoustic-guitar driven music is pleasing, the melodies are great and the lyrics have meaning that will sink in over time. You shouldn’t try to listen too hard to this album, just sit back and absorb it all, and soon the songs will be filling your ears with images and scenarios that your heart and mind will want to enjoy for years to come.
I am a fan of the acoustic guitar in its simplicity, especially if it is one of only a few instruments. Singer-songwriter James Taylor springs to mind as an artist who I really enjoy listening to. He can make you calm after a storm just by playing his guitar and singing a song with his soothing voice. Lukas Gadelha provokes a similar effect with his playing and writing style.
The lyrical maturity that Gadelha displays throughout this album is one that artists rarely reach in a full career. No matter what kind of mood you’re in, these songs will supplement it perfectly. Gadelha’s acoustic melodies include smooth ballads and quicker rhythms with calm, soulful vibes.
From the first listen, you’ll find yourself moving to the music and wrapped up in the songs. “What are you waiting for?” is the type of album you’ll want to share with friends because all of Lukas Gadelha’s songs are so pure and come straight from the heart!
For anyone who wishes to ease back and reflect on life, “What are you waiting for?” is the soundtrack to that moment.
