In early September 2011 Joe Jack was released from custody from the Idaho Department of Corrections after serving nearly nine months. He was arrested in mid-December of 2010 and charged with Trafficking Marijuana 5 to 25 pounds. Bond was set at $100,000 and he was held in the Kootenai County Jail in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho pending trial. Not having $100,000 sitting around, he had to deal with the fact that he was stuck over a thousand miles away from his loved ones. His life changed from that point on. “You can never understand losing everything until you’re placed in a 6 by 9 cell facing a serious felony,” says Jack. “I was facing a mandatory minimum of 3 years and up to a maximum of 15 years in prison and $50,000 fine.”
Jack completed a plea deal that saw him take part in a 90 day treatment program at the CAPP facility, which is a private medium security prison run by Corporate Corrections of America (CCA) located outside of Boise, Idaho. He completed the program successfully and was placed on felony probation for 3 years and was allowed to interstate compact his probation back to Nebraska. So here is today, on The Yellow Brick Road, in pursuit of his dreams.
In the spring of 2012 he founded Game Spittin Entertainment then spent 6 weeks in the studio writing and recording The Yellow Brick Road. “I put my heart and soul into this project,” he says, “but I wanna make it clear, I am not a rapper. I’m a hustla who happens to rap.”
I have to admit that Joe Jack has a tight single on his hands with “Different History”. He has such a rough yet appealing sound. He has the perfect voice and his flow is laid back and spectacular. The combination of production and niceness on the mic is one that is getting extremely rare nowadays.
This single is pure and original with great new sound that you can’t get sick of. This is a real winner. This is one of the most interesting fusions of musical styles. Who would have thought that a “tough” rapper could have a beat filled with beautiful electric guitars riffs? I thought this was stuff that only Everlast was capable of doing, instead Joe Jack nails it spot on, with a tight an interesting beat, together with a vocal flow that is just candy to your ears.
“Different History” is no joke. It’s different from all the rest, but rap is taking a new course with Joe Jack’s laid back and offhand manner. Everyone wants to change style, but few ever manage to really do something different. Joe Jack doesn’t have to put any effort into changing anything, he’s not a rapper, he is just the real deal telling things the way they are, in the manner that comes easiest to him. And it works because the single is 100% original and off the chain with both the beat and lyrics.
