Venice is the adopted home and creative backdrop for singer-songwriter Joe Con. A native of central Kentucky, Con blends soulful Southern swagger, sun-drenched, sandy ocean blues, and street savvy hip hop to create a potent brew of musical flavors. His songs range from raucous to reflective, sincere to sardonic, with acoustic and electric guitars interwoven into raw beats that move seamlessly beneath waves of melodic poetry. Citing influences as diverse as Woody Guthrie and Wu Tang Clan, Joe Con draws as much artistic inspiration from Kerouac and Rimbaud as he does from Hendrix and Howling Wolf.
This is one of the most interesting fusions of musical styles, I’ve heard in a while. Blending blues, rock, folk and straight hip-hop influences, then switching from a crunchy Stratocaster sound to an acoustic-guitar lullaby, might seem highly unlikely to the average Joe. Not so for Joe Con.
“I Choose You”, the 6 track album, showcases his many musical influences from anything to everything. The diversity of styles presented here is impressive, resulting in an innovative blend of top-quality music that is suitable for serious listening and appealing to fans of different genres. In a certain way Joe Con is showing the world that ‘genre’ is simply a word within the dictionary of modern music.
Simply stated, this is a collection of songs, with sincere, heartfelt creativity, interwoven with some beautiful, angry, intense, wistful and reflective moments. The musicianship on the album is also superb, while the lyrics have a depth to them that transcend any time frame.
Think about giants like Cohen, Lennon and Ray Davies, all from another era, to better understand that these songs are what you might expect from a modern troubadour-type, of a similar caliber. “I Choose You”, is a new sound that reflects the best of what should be going on in music today.
From the upbeat, “Nothing Without You” to the bittersweet-love of “Breaking My Heart” and the closing introspective lyrical genius of “Matter Of Time” and everything in between, this is an album of brilliant modernity that at times echoes former glories, inter-mingling the spirit of the present and the past, with a sense of both wisdom and youthful mischief, of music both disciplined and restless in its nature.
Music that probably began as a rhythm, a groove and a story, but has ended up as 6 distinct and richly melodic songs with shifting layers of textures and moods, at times allegorical and at others deeply personal. Out November 2014, “I Choose You”, by Joe Con is music, for a new society, for a new decade and a renewed vision.
