GINAHATESJOHNNY is the creation of singer Gina Fontana and producer JOHN(NY). Their unique dance-pop sound is a result of a musical-marriage of their individual styles. Gina, a natural performer and self-professed pop music fanatic, has a voice that seems to soar over the beats put down by her counterpart. JOHN(NY), having worked on the marketing side of the music industry producing videos for Ariana Grande, Britney Spears, and countless others – draws on his experience in the business and his classic rock roots to inspire and drive his own musical creations. Their single, “Heart of Stone” is a perfect example of the fusion of their creativity.
This is in some ways a step to the left for GINAHATESJOHNNY and in some ways a step to the right, depending upon how you choose to look at it. On the one hand, “Heart of Stone” is warmer and more mysterious than “Last Cry” . The soundscapes are incredibly lush and sweeping while also dense and fuzzy. This makes for a very interesting listening experience and Gina Fontana’s vocals are better than ever. She sounds almost surreal. In a word, WOW.
On the other hand, the crunchy guitar sound is not at all prominent on this single as it was on the previous one. But then this track is decidedly electro-dance orientated which totally justifies the instrumental choices. Having said that, the atmosphere on “Heart of Stone” is electric and spacious at the same time, beautiful at times and ‘synth-noisy’ at others, while reaching further than its predecessor: warm and dense, there is a feeling of susceptible magic wrapped within the track, which sits somewhere between Ellie Goulding and Lana Del Rey with a touch of Zedd thrown in too.
In fact what works most about this single is that it appears that GINAHATESJOHNNY have produced a recording that speaks to a wide range of personal musical influences. No doubt “Heart of Stone” will appeal to a broader audience than just the electro-dance set. From start to finish this song will stay with you–the harmonic vocals, the melody, and the rhythmic atmosphere will haunt you.
GINAHATESJOHNNY work through what they call “rock meets electro, meets pop, meets dance, meets everything else”, which probably ensures the group will be around long after trendy electro-dance genres go out of style. Sure, “Heart of Stone” may be seen as a dance-floor banger that will get silver spoons bouncing around necks everywhere. But there’s a surprising amount of depth and variety here, and best of all, there’s actual song-craft in GINAHATESJOHNNY’s music.
JOHN(NY) and Gina Fontana have created a rather enchanting dance-electro sound that is very sublime and yet richly layered, matched with smart heads for pop songwriting which gives them a very catchy feel. GINAHATESJOHNNY is one of those groups helping keep modern music interesting, hopefully “Heart of Stone” or another one of their tracks is already in your collection!
