Candice Russell grew up singing in the church. At the age of sixteen, she won a state wide singer-songwriting contest at the Oregon Fine Arts Festival. In 2012, she went to Hollywood on American Idol, Season 11, as a teenager. She also made it into the showcase final as a singer-songwriter at AMTC’s Shine event in Orlando in 2012. She has been seasoned by competitions, great mentors and coaches, and now she is ready to share with the world the songs that have been cultivated and developed behind the scenes.
Candice collaborated with Dave Lubben and her brother, Aaron Russell (who also assisted in production), to write all ten of the new and original songs on her album, “So Much More”. And it is with the title song that Candice begins to craft a perfectly balanced album. `Someday’ is subtle and moving in its musical simplicity, but Candice’s vocals cut through it like a knife. `When I See You’ is still my favorite track on the album. I’m literally obsessed with this song. It is just so emotionally compacted, exploding with such genuine insight and feeling, as it rises and falls in all the right places. ‘My Friend’ is another track that moves emotionally; a heartrending reality that she delivers with such emotional fluidity.
But each song on this album has a different vibe and music style to it and it really showcases the versatility of her powerful voice. It’s a young pop sounding album as you would expect but with a solid production and well written songs.
Without a doubt, the title track, So Much More is the most explosive on the album, where Candice lets us know that she is leaning her pop influences together with her more rock-centric efforts, to create a catchy track that kicks butt. Her vocals and her edge certainly shine through best in this setting.
There is so much emotion and energy in all of her songs though. The ballads are powerful while the upbeat songs are catchy and easy to listen to. All things told, Candice Russell is talented, she is versatile, she can write, she can play, and she can definitely sing!
