Callow Saints is an exciting 4-piece indie/rock band, comprising of Ruby Lewis (Lead Vocals), Seb James (Guitar & Vocals), Oran Green (Bass) and Alex Chadwick (Drums). With gigs such as Camden Rocks Festival, Cornbury Festival, and a headline at the O2 Academy under their belts, the band also has also released 2 EP’s and 2 singles including “The Emperor’s Lounge”. Listening to Callow Saints is like going on a journey down the rock n’ roll highway. You should know that you won’t find just one kind of sound on this road. It twists and turns through the depths of the soul of rock. There are deep, heartfelt blues influences, hopping indie groove, gritty grunge and alternative rock flavors.
I’m not sure it needs to be said for Callow Saints fans, but Ruby Lewis is a rock goddess in her own right. She can sing literally anything and make it sound unique and her own. Some of the stripped down songs on their latest EP really gave her a chance to shine, and she didn’t disappoint.
I’ve also come to appreciate Alex Chadwick’s work on the drums as well. He does a great job of setting the mood for each song. But then how could you ignore Seb James’ dirty over-driven guitar riffs or Oran Green’s stomping bass lines. Hearing Callow Saints play the “The Emperor’s Lounge” was probably the best thing I didn’t know I wanted listen to this year.
Slightly retro, sonically distorted, and downright dirty and mean, this thing kicks ass from the opening bars. “The Emperor’s Lounge” immediately got my attention – as does all music that focuses primarily on primal rhythmic power and sheer intensity.
Make no mistake – the Callow Saints sound like they have something to prove on this track. The unrelenting pressure to perform at a world-class level while the world’s assholes do their best to grind you down, would just about be a good enough reason for this 4 piece power unit to blow your mind away.
They play like they’re on a mission. Ruby Lewis’ vocals are perfection, flooding emotion when it needs it; as well as adding power and texture. This introductory track to the band’s talent is stunning from start to finish. Callow Saints refuse to be defined by rock music; instead, they defy logic and break the imaginary boundaries of what rock music is – I know, I’ve listened to their concise but entire catalog!
