Bad Neighborz , the 3-piece Rock-Reggae band from Southern California was created in the fall of 2010. In 2011 they released a five song E.P. appropriately named “Sunny D” after their home town San Diego. In 2012 Bad Neighborz were nominated in the San Diego Music Awards for Best Artist under the category World Music. Also in 2012, they focused on writing and recording their debut, self-titled, full length album at Earth Verb Studios in Cardiff, California. The album “Bad Neighborz” , has 13 tracks that embody the sound and style of the 3-piece Rock-Reggae band and their lifestyle.
Mellow reggae-styled musical grooves saturated with catchy lyrics and pop structures dominate this album, demonstrating Bad Neighborz’ ability to cross musical borders without skipping a beat. They are not one of those rip-off Ska bands. These guys come with great lyrics, great arrangements, and those all-important clean reggae rhythms.
On this debut album, beautiful melodies float in and out, track after track, as Bad Neighborz showcase their roots sound, their harmonies and the brass and percussion. There is more to this album than reggae. As this 3-piece band take the sound of So-Cal Surf & Skate, and lead us into a new legacy of amazing rock-reggae music.
With songs like “Californiyay”, “Sunny D”, and “Livin” you quickly hear that Bad Neighborz deliver good chilling music, very easy and pleasant to listen to. And that’s only the first three tracks on the album. The rest of the stuff could make terrific party music, or just kick it sounds for long-road cruising.
Standout tacks for me are “Burning Love”, “Sow”, ”Once You Got It”, “Dance With Me”, “Ocean Beach” and “A Bad Outro”. Which shows that Bad Neighborz are each extremely talented, and if you can appreciate great playing, mixed with a California reggae-surf sound, then you will love this album. It is addicting – the more you listen, the more you love it.
If you vaguely like Pepper, Sublime, Slightly Stooped, Long Beach Dub Allstars or even the Red Hot Chili Peppers, you’ll enjoy these guys. Once you hear their style you are hooked because it’s so pleasing to the ears. The sound of their music and their effort to create some good lyrics (which is noticeably absent in a lot of other reggae outfits), not to mention their ability to rock the house, are simply awesome.
The band obviously has a clear vision and they are nailing it. The album will definitely put a smile on your face as the music puts your mind and sole in a better place. The bottom line is that Bad Neighborz write great music with their own unique style. This is a solid release from a band that I have just become familiar with. They are the ultimate feel-good band!
