Australian singer-songwriter, Alex Hallahan’s entire catalogue, including his much lauded second album release Human Veins, is FREE to download from his website. The message on Hallahan’s website could not be clearer…
“We want you to have it, free. Tell everyone.”
Human Veins was originally released in October 2011 and spread quietly via word of mouth throughout 2012. During 2013 Human Veins found growing appreciation via online websites such as Soundcloud and now Hallahan believes that the best way to get his music heard on a much larger scale is to set it free. He is putting zero walls between his music and listeners.
Human Veins was superbly produced, engineered, mixed and mastered by ARIA (Australian Record Industry Association) award winner Craig Pilkington.
I am entranced by both the musicality and the clever and thoughtful lyrics of “Human Veins”. As a whole the album considers the nature of love, loneliness, longing and desire. The vocals and instrumentals are both energetic and as polished as one would expect from a major label recording, considering that this is an independent effort.
Alex Hallahan’s overall style on this album is a charming blend of folk-country and roots rock. “Human Veins” is an album that makes one think. There are satisfying harmonies, some great playing of instruments, and most of all, about a dozen of real standout tunes.
The striking thing about Alex Hallahan’s music is not the timbre of the instruments, the quantity of great melodies or the quality of the production. From the most basic, stripped-down standpoint, any art form is meant to evoke emotion. Anybody could technically learn how to play a guitar or sing a couple of lines, but not everybody can make you feel it like Alex Hallahan does.

Hallahan provides truly thought-provoking music. Every word sounds genuine. Each lyric is placed not because it rhymes with a previous line, but because it is part of the narrative and meant to be just there. A common thread of honesty winds through every track on this album. The difference between Hallahan and other singer-songwriters is that he is not just telling you a story, he actually means every word, and that comes across very strongly on this album.
My favorite tracks are: “Orbiting”, “This Field Of Mine”, “Midnight Radio”, “Ballad On The Run”, “Not The Devil Not The Nun”, “Mother And Child Gone” and “Nothing Stops The Rain”, but the plain truth is that Human Veins is a great album, full of unforgettable songs, strong melodies and crystal clear instrumental and vocal performances.
Producer Craig Pilkington brings great sensibility to the project, with a clean mix that gives the instruments and the voices enough room to breathe. There’s also a nice flow, track to track, making this an album, as opposed to just a collection of songs.
Fans of Alex Hallahan should find much to love here, while it’s a perfect place for the uninitiated to start. Alex Hallahan seems to have hit his stride on this true musical treasure. Enjoy his music by starting to download this album for FREE now!
