The artist Akaki Gumberidze( for fans – AKA), is an 18-year-old student and one-man band a from Georgia -Tbilisi, who creates post-rock/experimental music. AKA who only started his musical career 2 years ago, began mixing instrumental styles achieving exceptional sounds and breakbeat music, also winning some contests along the way. Today however he is creating more experimental/psych rock music with FL studio and other electronic software programs, as well as using live instruments during his creative process.
A few months back AKA released his 5-track Ep, ‘Love’s Everywhere’. This Ep, while retaining all the required bleeps and beats of the electronic genre, transcends its counterparts by being subtly beautiful. It is subtle -no instant gratification or adrenaline rushes that would leave you dancing to a raging beat. It’s a gradual kind of listening experience, and concentrates on persistent melodies that weave in and out of the foreground, while for the most part, the beats have gradual build-ups before reaching climax; except on ‘Ninja Soul’ and the cover version of ‘Feel Good Inc’, where the beats are instantly driven.
AKA’s technical excellence is there, but there is something very candid and righteous-like in some of the songs – like ‘Ne n Ne’ and ‘Wall-E’ -that remind one of the solitary innocence of childhood, hazy memories of eating snacks while watching movies or strolling through an autumn-leaved park, immediately come to mind.
On the other hand there is a more complex song like ‘Love’s Everywhere’ which starts off slowly and muffled, gradually working itself up to a beat-intensified frenzy, with really cool sounds lapping over one another as they compete with a beat that gradually overtakes them- then suddenly everything breaks down to a gentle whispering sound.
The music shows influences from various musicians, but always manages to be original. The songs envelop the listener with sounds and textures that seem so familiar, that they could almost be memories. In fact, what I most liked in this Ep is the beauty of the progression of the chords.
The fact that ‘Love’s Everywhere’ is an Ep that takes very little effort to completely enjoy and also one that anyone should be able to understand, makes this an easy listening experience. Notwithstanding the ‘easy listening experience’, the Ep has an emotional depth that takes you in, surrounds you, and makes you forget about reality.
AKA has succeeded in producing an Ep for any fan of quality, emotionally-induced electronica who wants to listen to something different than the usual IDM!
Last month AKA also released his twenty minute experimental track, ‘a polka-dotted donkey’, which he is offering as a free gift to all fans of his music. The mega-track is nostalgic and futuristic, mechanical and organic, all at once…and it’s as creepy as it is endearing! Download this one to get a taste of AKA, before grabbing the ‘Love’s Everywhere’ Ep.
