Almost a year after reviewing the releases “Crazy” and “Drunk Sailor”, 1016 West Franklin are back with their latest video/single, “How Did We Get So Stupid” in support of their upcoming album. This baby rocks and it is clear the band has grown musically and personally from their previous releases. The band based out of Florence, Italy, has been originally hailed as creators and exponents of the genre known as Bluestep (blues + dubstep) by its fans and followers.
1016 West Franklin are currently made up of Nicola Turri, Fabio Lapini, Sid Parrotta and Ivo Ippoliti .
The video/single, “How Did We Get So Stupid” is magical, mysterious, dark, angry and powerful, as 1016 West Franklin deal with current society trends. The first four lines of lyrics blatantly lay their thoughts on the line:
“the prophets of the revolution
are in love with a playstation
we feed the animals with crap
and the animals feed the nation”
In an age when rap and electronic machines dominate the radio waves, it is easy to accept the notion that great, emotive rock music is all but gone away. But just as one is about to turn out the light on the future of rock music, 1016 West Franklin release “How Did We Get So Stupid” proving Neil Young’s epic phrase, “Rock n’ Roll will never die.”
This song defines 1016 West Franklin as a band who can draw from a variety of influences and craft each influence into something that winds up sounding completely and wholly original. Meanwhile, the band further displays their talent in writing powerful lyrics. They are able to make the listener dig for true meaning while at the same slapping them in the face with raw emotion. This single contains many high points and zero low ones, for a band that has not yet received the attention it definitely deserves.
This is ultimately a spectacular single, made more so by its simplicity of production. 1016 West Franklin come full circle here, utilizing all aspects of their talents to create a song that truly rocks outs with its raucous and powerful tune, and its drive is carried on throughout, relentlessly.
It takes a step in a slightly different creative direction than the band’s previous works, but this thunderous track is ultra-tight and precise, lavishing us with yet another lyrically and musically superior song.
There’s no denying these guys are masters of great riffs, lyrics and raw energy. Buy everything they put out to savor all their musical styles. You won’t be disappointed!
