SpaSeboy: “Running Around The Clock” – Detached from the safety and set form of traditional pop music

Singer, Guitarist, and Songwriter, Jesse Allen aka SpaSeboy, has had a series of struggles that has been, “just as much of a setback as it has been a source of inspiration,” he says, “surviving everything from the streets of Hollywood and a near-death experience, after being robbed and shot in the chest with a 45 point, blank at close range.”  Jesse who also fronted the Minneapolis MN based 3 piece Band ‘FEELICKS’, up until their breakup in 2000, said that his prayer was answered by God with a miraculous recovery in just 7 days.

SpaSeboy, the left-handed guitarist, has been working independently on a series of original material ever since; not least his latest recording, “Running Around The Clock”. Jesse categorizes his material into the Trip-induced Acoustic/ Indie-Rev styles.

It’s very hard to write about SpaSeboy’s music, but that’s mainly due to the fact that it’s so damn hard to listen to. Nevertheless, one of the most important elements of being an artist is to remain completely true to yourself and your craft. Multi-instrumentalist Jesse Allen, the only constant member of SpaSeboy, would probably not agree more.

He certainly doesn’t lack the ability to express what’s on his mind and in his heart. He is the master of being able to get to the absolute core of his feelings with every successive track he releases, regardless of how many listeners he leaves behind in the process.

Detached from the safety and set form of traditional pop music, “Running Around The Clock” is a track bursting with tension, tenderness, pain, and restraint– concepts that seem to have seeped through SpaSeboy’s music from the beginning, but which he has never so deftly expressed.

SpaSeboy’s songs are often tremendously dense, but the combinations and contrast he teases out of the mix are always immediate and striking. Indeed, the quality of the melodic and instrumental interplay is right up there with many more straightforward pop bands, but SpaSeboy manages to use it to an entirely different end.

SpaSeboy’s music is challenging not because its recordings are particularly dissonant or noisy, but rather because it addresses you in a manner that’s categorically different from what you’ve come to expect from any kind of music– pop, experimental or otherwise.

SpaSeboy isn’t a middle-of-the-road project, in the sense that it’s unfeasible to hear anyone declare him as being ”okay.” You’re either on board because you relate to what you get out of his music, or you’re one of the others who are running to get away from its harsh reality.

With the release of “Running Around The Clock”, SpaSeboy continues to explore and expand his musical modus operandi, and in so doing has made a track that is profound, strangely innovative, and absolutely vital to his musical existence.
