Mike Nickels – If you’re looking to hear some Hick-hop off the beaten path!

What would you think of an artist who makes statements like, “I like almost all genres of music and this is just a hobby,” or “I write my own music because I don’t like what’s on the radio?” Well, whatever you may think, Mike Nickels aka goodpace, is a smart, hard-nosed musician who puts on no pretenses. He is one of the few bare-boned, bare-soul artists left in what is now known as ‘an industry’. The songs “Don’t Waste My Time” and “Love In A Rhyme of A Song” are testaments to his plights as a storyteller, reflecting on good times, an uncertain future, love, family and anything else that he cares to comment on.

A cross between Everlast, Yelawolf and Kid Rock, the way Mike Nickels mixes up the blend makes for a really cool, unique sound – an evolution in rap, pop and alternative rock? It really doesn’t matter, considering Mike has put together some sleeper tracks in his own hick-hop style. Many of the songs I heard on his website seem to be close to his heart and when he sings them you can tell that he means every word that he is singing.

Mike Nickels hits the spot with me, with an important kind of musical statement for this generation. The music is a mixture of Country, folk, a little bit of rock and a smattering of rap. His vocal style is also perfect for this blend of music, but it is the gut-wrenching real writing – in, out, and around life’s trenches that I can relate to. The key to his top notch writing is that he uses simple words to describe complex emotions. And from what I can hear on each subsequent song, especially the acoustic-guitar, slow-burner, “Don’t Waste My Time”, I can only assume that Mike is a mature songwriter, and only getting better!
