Kid J is a Christian rap artist from a small town who blew up after putting out the single “Livin My Life” which attracted vast listener attention, leading to him being booked to open for Stevie Stone and M.A.D. This single has also cemented a lingering thought I’ve had lately: Within the Christian music industry, it is the rappers and hip-hop artists who are bolder on the truth than anyone else.
While many Christian artists can formulate the right chords and vague and/or repetitive lyrics to have a radio hit, its individuals like Kid J who is bringing the Truth to music. “Livin My Life” is outstanding with a great beat and onpoint lyrics.
Not content to sit back on his laurels though, Kid J has gone one step further and has another single out, entitled “Colors From The Alley”. Refreshing, Christ-centered boldness in light of all of the evil in our day, Kid J brings the Word of God with tact, grace, boldness, clarity, and accuracy without being preachy. Kid J is a true emcee that handles the mic with precision. He’s also artist and illustrates this over excellent hooks that are heartfelt in “Colors From The Alley”.
On both “Livin My Life” and “Colors From The Alley” “ Kid J keeps finding ways to incorporate everyday instances and issues on top of modern production without sacrificing his message or sounding overly preachy. These tracks make me want to roll the windows down, turn it up and bounce.
“Colors From The Alley” is such a growth project, you’ll love the wordplay and depth of the subject matter. There is no question Kid J is lyrically gifted. It’s evident that he works hard smithing words together in crafty ways. A solid production and solid flow, makes “Colors From The Alley” another winner. I expect to hear this on Christian stations around the nation.
