Josephine Li has been playing professionally since the age of 13. She is classically trained (Conservatoire) with a Distinction level in ABSRM grade 8 obtained when she was 12 and an LCTL diploma level when she was 16. She is familiar with all genres – classical, contemporary, RAP, RnB, Soul, Gospel, Pop, etc. – and has had a lot of live gigging experiences with bands and classical performances with orchestras in the UK. Josephine’s performance tools include RODE, MXL 990/991, Roland Duo-Capture FX Interface, preamps and Ableton, coupled up with a Macbook.
The track “Deathproof” is poignant and passionate at once, demonstrating Josephine Li’s ability to strike several emotional notes at the same time. The passages are resonant with thoughtful, gentle and introspective states of mind, occasionally ringing out with intensities of sustained emotion. It is a wonderful, creative and unusual piece of music -albeit a very short one, clocking in at only 2 minutes and 43 seconds.
Josephine Li’s playing style is original, hypnotic, and quintessentially beautiful. Both calming and inspiring, there is simplicity to her solo piano that overlays great emotion and tenderness. Josephine’s strength lies in her ability to allow the musical phrases to grow and change – becoming more emotional in content and space, without becoming more complex or overbearing technically, but only deeper in meaning.
Josephine has a wonderful talent for very simple melody and chords that beckon the listener to another plane; simple, clean piano, lightly played, with just enough dynamics that add sufficient depth to capture your attention without disturbing it.
Josephine Li has not only written a beautiful piece of music, but she has captured the feeling and very essence of its sumptuous execution. If all the soulless pop drivel nowadays bores you, then here is some captivating piano music to fall back on. It falls somewhere between the complexity of the classical genre and the simplistic beauty of the new age genre.
In a world of chaotic stress, Josephine’s minimalist-sounding yet affecting and intimate piano sounds know exactly how to calm a soul. If you need to bring things down a notch, and want to sit back, relax and find some inner peace – give “Deathproof” a listen.
