Before Summer Ames could walk, the independent artist from Dallas was influenced by her grandmother’s dusty vinyl albums. They would sit on the floor together sifting through the sounds of Connee Boswell, Ella Fitzgerald and Joni Mitchell (to name a few). Today, Summer pieces together her own sound. Summer’s debut EP, “Complicated Daydream”, is a powerful glimpse into her passion for creating music. Summer recently won an Independent Music Award for her song “Breaking Up The Love Scene”. She’s currently writing for her first full-length album which she plans to release later this year. But unlike most artists who shove their global creativity down your throat, Summer has chosen a completely different route. She has launched her “You Make The Next Album” project.
Which song ideas should Summer complete for her next worldwide digital release? All she asks is that you listen to her latest ideas and provide feedback on which songs YOU like best. Some ideas are near full-length demos, others are merely a glimpse into the songwriting process. Now if all artists did this, wouldn’t it be wonderful? We’d have super albums that WE like, with almost no filler or egocentrically orientated material specially produced for artistic jerking off!
Seriously folks this is a rare opportunity to share in an artist’s growth. You shouldn’t miss this chance for anything! It’s also particularly easy to do, just hookup to Summer’s Soundcloud profile and go to the YOU MAKE THE NEXT ALBUM playlist. To vote: share your favorite song idea and use #summerames.
Whichever songs you choose for her album, I think this collection demonstrates that Summer Ames has an incredibly bright future ahead as an impressive singer-songwriter of original indie-pop music. I found some of her material from 4 years back and it’s astounding that she is not more well-known around the mainstream circuits. This once again proves how much marketing strategies either penalize or reward music potential.
Her stylistic influences range all over the musical map. Whether its stripped-down acoustic-based, or synth-powered, Summer comes shining through. Her voice is powerful and rich while she is a great songwriter with meaningful lyrics and very little pop fluff. I gathered this much from just a few bars of the eighteen songs available on this collection.
Summer Ames is instantly distinctive, moving, and relateable. The strength of her music lays in the melodies and the ‘hypnotic atmosphere’ she manages to create in a very short space of time. Perhaps one of her best assets is her powerful, lovely voice which she uses without over-indulgence. When Summer ‘cuts loose’, she does so in the classic singer-songwriter ‘belting-out’ tradition, rather than in the pop princess ‘shrieking style’.
This is an amazing collection of music by an extremely interesting artist. The melodies and Summer’s voice are addictive, so without wanting to influence any you, I’m going to stick my neck out and choose my personal favorites, without of course, telling you why. I’ll leave that for the review of the final album release!
My standout choices are: “What Do You Care”, “Spark”, “Digital Love”, “Know You”, “Breaking Point”, “Hear The World”, “Circus Animals”, “Love”, “Older & Wiser”, “I Hope You Know”. But please don’t take my word for it, or you’ll be hearing MY album. Go over to Soundcloud and YOU MAKE THE NEXT ALBUM with Summer Ames!
