Alex Thomas Davis: “UFOlogy” details his alien abduction experience!

Engaging storytelling backed by lo-fi acoustic-guitar tunes.

From Yorkshire Dales, England comes the eclectic lo-fi acoustic artist, Alex Thomas Davis aka alexthomasdavis, who believe it or not, has written 25 albums over the period of 6 years. And if you think that’s unbelievable, then wait for it; Alex has also released and album entitled “UFOlogy” – which details his alien abduction experience!

UFOlogy” contains 10 tracks, namely: Alien Grey Matters, The Operation, Hybrids, On The Origin Of Mankind, The Guard, Binary Code, Human Farm, The Revolt, We Got GOD and Apocalypse Or War, which should give you a broad direction of the direction of storytelling on the album. There is something about alexthomasdavis’ lyrics; even when you’re not exactly sure what he’s talking about, it always feels like he’s telling it like it is…or at least has been for him.

Alex Thomas Davis has written far and away some of the best lyrics of any album this year. Depending on your personal taste in music, the lo-fi acoustic-guitar tunes may or may not always be up to the stories, but the images his songs present and the emotions they evoke are phenomenal.

I’d never heard of alexthomasdavis before, even though he apparently has a indie rep. His music mostly carries the indie staple of having simple guitar rhythms crafted to focus your attention on the picturesque storytelling. All the songs hold your attention from beginning to end, making “UFOlogy” an engaging album.

The songs are autobiographical, exploratory and inquisitory, while the lyrics come at you so fast that sometimes it’s hard to decode them, but among those that you do decode are:

“Why’s it so unclear, Aliens or god made us

While we live in fear, Nursing giant hangovers

So give a final cheer”

The mind and soul searching in alexthomasdavis’ writing and singing is a mix of healing lotion and concentrated sunlight through a magnifying glass. Perhaps it’s best described as something that penetrates and painfully burns open wounds, while contemporarily healing them. It’s what I like about alexthomasdavis’ storytelling; he searches for answers, tears them apart, then puts them back together a little better than they were before, so you may have a clearer vision of them.

UFOlogy”  is bizarrely endearing and heartwarming. Alex Thomas Davis’ style is to tell stories through song. He tells his stories through a series of clipped and clear flashbacks. Most often, he lays out his thoughts through a series of first person narrations. “UFOlogy”, like its predecessors, is as much a story as it is music. Given this fairly unique brand of storytelling, listeners who just throw the album on for background music, or listen distractedly, may find the album very unsatisfying. Few powerful stories or interesting themes can be appreciated by half-hearted attention, and “UFOlogy” is no different.

It’s hard to predict what exactly alexthomasdavis will release with each upcoming album. He might put out an elaborately themed concept album or he may release a collection of loose sketches. Either way, you know it’s going to be something totally original with great lyrics!
