What we have with the single, “Make It Home” is two MCs at the top of their game. Wreck The Rebel’s rhymes are tighter and more complex than ever before and Smooth Da Truth proves that he deserves his spot on this track. The energy these two exude throughout the CD is amazing and the way they feed off of each other’s rhymes, is easy to come back to over and over.
What I love so much about this single is that Wreck The Rebel & Smooth Da Truth sound so intense throughout so it gets your adrenaline pumping but when you actually listen to the lyrics they go deep.
Wreck The Rebel forges surefire verbal mastery, and this track is another hard-boiled testament of various ‘excursions incurred along the path of stardom’. Wreck The Rebel’s verses flow with an unexpurgated, venomous power, a fierceness coiled and then sprung outward with the manic force of a jackhammer.
He doesn’t require a Just Blaze or Kanye beat to spit his thoughts successfully. He has his own melodic but menacingly hard hitting production to drive his lyrics along.
From a technical standpoint, Wreck The Rebel should be everyone’s favorite rapper. The San Francisco native has padded his résumé with a colorful collection of songs, tapes and appearances that are jammed packed with super beats and rhymes that are nothing short of a Hip Hop purist’s wet dream.
It’s hard to totally hate on this project because of how much Wreck The Rebel & Smooth Da Truth care about their craft and is dead set on keeping it art — while at the same time hitting the perfect medium between conscious and catchy.
Too often in Hip Hop, art and life imitate each other as artists get caught up in what they personify in their music. That real life carries over into the music and the line between the streets and the studio is often muddled.
That doesn’t happen with artists who form part of the KonQuest crew as they always have a true vision of where they’re taking their craft. And on “Make It Home”, Wreck The Rebel has once more fine-tuned his lyrical execution and ability to write detailed, narrative tracks, while at the same time he does an impeccable job of delivering a more than palatable beat.
Needless to say, he is perfectly accompanied by Smooth Da Truth, who holds down the chorus and throws in a sublime verse.
