Will Ready: “Do Da Damn Thang” – an uncompromising sound, ably adjusted,to reflect the current musical trends

Will Ready is said to be the total package. This  smooth R&B, Soul and Jazz entertainer has opened shows for music legends such as Chaka Khan, The Temptations, The Whispers,  Al Jarreau, Zapp, Midnight Star, Slave, and Howard Hewitt amongst others.

The aspiring ex-basketball, player sidelined by a fatal knee injury, has released 6 CDs, spanning a 20-year career. The latest “The Girl 4 Me” was produced by Grammy Producer Mr. Jonz. Will Ready has just dropped the upbeat soul-infused single, “Do Da Damn Thang”, taken from the upcoming album, “Black Coffee”, which is set to release during October.

For those who eagerly trawl through the internet, the forums and digital music sites in search of new R&B and soul music, nothing is as exciting as finding something that is edgy and modern sounding, with an old school attitude. Will, on his latest release proves that he is on top of his game, when it comes to this specific blend of music.

“Do Da Damn Thang” shifts gear somewhat – the song has a hip-hop soul feel to it, yet rides that up-temp groove that Will Ready delivers so well. The background vocal arrangement is delightful, and Will produces an inspired vocal performance. The bass and synth-pads propel the song forward, producing a groove that instantly forces the listener to either tap their feet or bob their head, or in my case both.

Will Ready flirts with current musical trends but knows enough to not let them dictate his signature sound. He knows enough to not over-sell a song. You’ll hardly hear him scream or shout, but that doesn’t mean he won’t emotionally invest himself into a song.

He stays in his comfort zone, which is something listeners really benefit from. “Do Da Damn Thang” is proof that just when you thought that real R&B and soul was dead, a professional in the game comes by and gives evidence that it still has life.

If you’re the type who has an equal appreciation for classic R&B, smooth soul, or solid upbeat groove and prefers smart, tasteful and mature music, then “Do Da Damn Thang” is a project you’ll likely enjoy. No doubt, Will Ready’s longevity in the industry must be attributed to his ability to present an uncompromising sound, ably adjusted, subtly over the years to reflect the current musical trends.
