The Incredible Kicks, the 3-man outfit from Brisbane – Australia, featuring Travis Hair on lead vocals, guitar and keyboards, Luis Bran on bass and vocals and Josh Griffin on drums and vocals, are back with a brand new album – “Ineffective Lullabies.”
The new album to be released on the 13th of July, comes after their smashing previous album – ‘Fairytales,’ which quite honestly blew us away with it’s perfect musical craftmanship and Travis Hair’s superb vocals.
Whereas ‘Fairytales’ seemed like an album made to impress, showcasing each member’s instrumental and vocal prowess, ‘Ineffective Lullabies’ comes across as more understated and somehow retro sounding, without sacrificing their individual bravado at all.
There are very strong traces of Styx, The Electric Light Orchestra and Supertramp pervading the sound on this album.
This mainly has to do with the vocal execution and harmony arrangements, which once again come shining through in no uncertain terms.
We hate to keep saying this, but Travis Hair is a singer with balls…in his vocal chords! And he can slap them just about anywhere he wants. Whether it’s throaty and gutsy like Freddie Mercury on ‘Footprints’ or sweet and high like Mika on the title track, ‘Ineffective Lullaby.’ Travis is in a class of his own.
The second reason, is the band’s musical ability and creative orchestrations. Their songs are filled with tempo changes. Stops, starts, breaks and bridges are so effectively used, as to keep each and every bar highly interesting.
Build-ups, breakdowns and crescendo’s abound as well, before and after choruses, like on ‘Last Person Alive’ and ‘S’tover’ which thanks to Luis Bran on bass and Josh Griffin on drums, are all magnificently executed.
And then of course there’s that magic invisible ingredient that makes the band really rock and groove, as on the track – ‘Ratings.’
You’ve either got it or you haven’t.
The Incredible Kicks have got it…all!
We tried hard to pick the best track here, but there is just so much goodies and highlights on this 7-track album that it seems almost unfair to choose only one.
However we forced ourselves to be unfair and selected the one track we thought, genuinely embodied the spirit and sound of this phenomenal Australian alternative rock band.
It had to be ‘Last Person Alive.’ If you’ve never heard of this band before, and were given the chance to hear only one of their tracks, do not miss this one!
Just sit back and turn up the volume.
You’ll find that, The Incredible Kicks are truly incredible!
