The early 90’s was a great time for music, no matter what type of music you were into; If you liked hip hop, you had Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. If you liked R&B you had Mary J. Blige and R. Kelly. If you liked rock and metal, you had Metallica, Faith No More and Red Hot Chili Peppers to name a few, But they were all dwarfed by the beautiful new style of rock known as “grunge”.
Grunge bands had their own niche about them; Nirvana was about angst and alienation, Pearl Jam was the socially conscious ones, Stone Temple Pilots was the performance art band and Soundgarden was the belligerent version of Led Zeppelin.
But of all of the prominent bands who came out of that era, nobody really harnessed their potential and abilities better than Alice In Chains. They dominated power and energy while communicating trancendental emotions.
Fast Forward to today and listen to independent artist Rob Decoup, whose musical performances display signicantly familiar traces of AIC.

An initial listen to some of Rob’s musical interpretations like, “Killer Sunshine,” “Free” and the Alice Cooper cover “Pain,” will confirm that they retain that grunge impact from the golden era, with it’s harrowing lyrical content, the heavy crunching guitars and jaw-dropping choruses while not loosing any pop appeal. Decoup’s tunes build a huge, multi-faceted atmosphere with flourishes and touches of classic rock influences and some truly great guitar work.
Rob Decoup is currently busy releasing his latest track “Burn Me To The Ground,” as a single on iTunes, backed up by a music video on Youtube.
We had the privilege of previewing the media recently and are happy to note that Rob hasn’t lost any of the grunge feel, although the single is a lot more accessible and less darker than that particular genre.
“Burn Me To The Ground” is much more than just grunge and has its own edge of Americana and Alternative Rock influences built-in. It runs a strong range of dynamics. The melody is juxtaposed against a solid acoustic-rock time signature and meandering song structure, while Rob flaunts his raunchy vocals across the arrangement, with feel and determination.
With the latest single, Rob Decoup proves to be the man of the hour. The song displays some fantastic guitar work, not only in the solos, but also in the emotive rhythm playing and expressive riff tones, without which the song would not have as strong an effect upon the listener. Really great work!
Over and above the previous citations, the lyrics are intensely personal, powerful, never ambiguous and delivered sincerely. So let’s not give mind to what kind of category this music gets put into. It’s simply damn good rock n’ roll no matter what you think you might like the most.
“Burn Me To The Ground” is an essential single for rock fans to have in their collection, while maybe awaiting a new album release from Rob Decoup.
