Winner of the 2012 award for Best Indie Rock Band at the Artists In Music Awards in Los Angeles and nominated for Best International Act at the LA Music Awards, the Monks of Mellonwah are a four-piece alternative rock and indie band based in Sydney, Australia.
The Monks who are formed by Will Maher (vocals), Joe de la Hoyde (backing vocals/guitar), John de la Hoyde (bass) and Josh Baissari (drums), blend elements of classic blues & rock with modern indie and alternative rock. Their first E.P., Stars Are Out, has been highly praised since its release in 2010, taking the band from strength to strength.
They received significant radio play across Australia on community radio and more recently Triple J. Their debut music video “Swamp Groove” claimed first prize at the ‘Harold’s Shorts’ short film festival. Growing media interest has led to the Monks being featured in an up and coming radio documentary, celebrating 25 years for ABC’s music program RAGE.
Their brand new EP, set to take alternative rock fans by storm, is entitled “Neurogenesis”, which is also the opening track of the album.
“Neurogenesis” is a slow rock-steady number, that drives a cheekily strummed electric guitar rhythm under Will Maher’s articulate vocals. The band steadily break into a crunching chorus arrangement, which inevitably leads to Joe de le Hoyde’s blistering guitar solo. This is the essence of passionate rock n’ roll.
“Neverending Spirit” is a melodic mid-tempo radio friendly rocker that contains all the ingredients necessary for a pop hit. Endearing vocals, clean overall mix, powerful but unobtrusive guitars riffs, quietly sung verses and soaring choruses. Add the fact that it’s under 4 minutes long and you have a clear winner.
“Kyoto” demonstrates the band’s tight cohesive playing. Weaving through stop start rythms, drummer Josh Baissari and John de le Hoyde on bass keep the engine room pumping with electrifying energy, while Joe and Will put the cherries on top of the song.
“You Shine” is slow and atmospheric, showcasing once again the awe-inspiring talents of guitarist Joe de la Hoyde who literally leads the band around the meandering and enchanted choral arrangements with some really tastefully played riffs.
The Monks of Mellonwah are impressive in the fact that you continually get the impession that this is a real honest-to-goodness, hardworking rock n’ roll band. And even though there are audible splashes of genius all over the Ep, you never actually sense the presence of any prima donnas, but only great musicians.

I’m not sure if this is due to the superb production team made up of Grammy Award winning producer Jeff Bova (Michael Jackson, Billy Joel), Ryan Miller (John Frusciante, Flea, The Ruminators) and renowned engineer Howie Weinberg (Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chili Peppers) who managed to keep everything in perfect balance, or if it’s just a natural human trait of the four band members.
Either way “Neurogenesis” by the Monks of Mellonwah is definiteley a modern rock album we highly recommend.
