With all the cheesy sounding R&B, elevator jazz and overproduced soul music out there, the “MOON IN GEMINI” album is a left-field surprise. Krena Dean has a clear-headed grip on how she wants to represent her musical art – and that is, not packaged in a mainstream box, with all the usual wrappings, ribbons and tags!
Of the recorded project Krena Dean says: “Moon in Gemini is to be the first installment of many creative projects in order to awaken the collective and break cycles. Using my years of Astrology studies, I’ve matched each song with an aspect of my chart. It is my goal to introduce authenticity and originality of myself to the world. I am fond of subliminal messaging, as to why I have vigorously studied the occult.”
And she continues: “I am hopeful to inspire listeners to investigate and look up the hidden messages in this project. Finding out more about their own astrological transits and creatively learning about the occult info in this world; the same info that I have been investigating in my cocoon for years.”
Unfortunately I am no Astro-geek or assiduous studier of the occult, so my personal appreciation of Krena Dean’s works, contained within her 14-track album, “MOON IN GEMINI”, is mundanely terrestrial in its approach – the voice, the music, the melody, the messages and above the emotion she delivers.
Krena Dean is a very gifted and talented singer-songwriter. Her soothing style blends alternative jazz and neo-soul influences to create an amazing backdrop of seductive beats, and a distinctive vocal style. With a musical approach that contains highly uplifting and positive lyrics. She offers us an in depth look into her wonderful life filled with poetic visions and respected insights. Krena is proof-positive that the earthly soul and ecstatic spirit of esoteric cultures can indeed hold the same place in modern popular music. The key is to denude ourselves of conventional artistic forms and beliefs.
Krena Dean is definitely an interesting new figure in the music industry. An industry that she particularly dislikes, because of its strict conformity to how ‘art’ should be made, packaged and sold. However, to be able to break its bonds, it is an industry she will need to know, engage and contrast: and what better way to do this than to produce and release her own music…on her own terms.
“MOON IN GEMINI”, will swing listeners to Krena Dean’s side with the eclectic title track, and when she exposes her broad range of harmonized aural colors in a cappella tracks such as “Good Girl” and “Lost in the Game”, or the slow-melting soul of “Black Petals” and “Sidewalk”. She is just as immaculately captivating on drum-driven tunes such as “Skin Deep”, “Good Girls” and “Beautiful”.
Her lyrics at times are reassuring and soothing, at others, scathing, explicit and angry, as she mixes ideas of self-awareness, empowerment and existentialism through her own personal filter. A sign that she has something special going on right from the start!
“MOON IN GEMINI” is not your typical alternative jazz or neo-soul album and every track adds value to the overall eclectic vibe, which is smart, urban and edgy. It may take you a few listens to get used to Krena Dean’s style, but after that, you will be addicted, as track after track, this album just gets better and better!
