Falcon Down has been crafting a rather impressive catalog of music with his Mayday Mayday series

Mayday Madyay, Pt.2 (The Wreckage and the Demo Tape)

Mayday Mayday, Pt. 2 is the second installment of a larger 3 part release, ‘Venez M’aider’ (Mayday Mayday Pt.1, 2 & 3) still to be released. Falcon Down firmly states that he is a lyricist, guitarist and singer – strictly in that order, further adding that his sound is ‘narrower than niche’ and that he is aiming to write songs that connect with people on a personal level.

The songs on Mayday Madyay, Pt.2 (The Wreckage and the Demo Tape) is presented as originally penned and stripped back to their original essence. I imagine the best way to absorb these 6 stories set to song would be to listen to them the way they were created, alone and with a beverage or two – just you, the room, the speakers and the songs.

Falcon Down has been crafting a rather impressive catalog of music with his Mayday Mayday series. His music and lyrics cut to the bone with their raw sincerity. I am a big fan of musicians who know how to write quality songs that tell a story without being too sappy in one extreme or too obtuse in the other extreme. If you can’t empathize with at least one of these songs, you have either lived a perfect, charmed life or you should have someone check you for a heartbeat.

There is something almost otherworldly about Falcon Down’s music, as though it fell through an interstitial rip, sounding like nothing else I’ve ever heard – beautiful, yearning, shimmering, and a little sinister. Mayday Madyay, Pt.2 (The Wreckage and the Demo Tape) is a very simple construction, with only vocals and acoustic guitar. However, Falcon Down is able to take what would appear to be a limited palette and create a range of melodies that go from light to dark and foreboding.

Thanks to the magic of the internet, I was able to listen to Mayday Madyay, Pt.2 (The Wreckage and the Demo Tape) many times, and it’s the most stripped down album I’ve ever heard in a while. There are no hidden melodies, and what you hear on the surface is all you get. It doesn’t get more stripped down than this. Everything just consists of Falcon Down’s, his acoustic guitar, and his thoughts. Really doesn’t sound very interesting, I know. Yet this is the exact essence of one of the meanings of music, putting your thoughts and emotions into music.

What Falcon Down did on this album is just monumental, and despite its super-exiguous nature, this album just has so much to it, and proves to be more and more rewarding with time. Falcon Down is no virtuoso musician, but he is an awe-inspiring songwriter who knows how to entrance your senses. His distinctive voice just has an indescribable warmth and coziness to it that perfectly complements his entrancing guitar melodies.

With an album like this, it could potentially become monotonous, but not so here. From the bouncy “Daniel in the Lion’s Den” and “Space In Between” to the dark and haunting “Before David, Goliath’s Origin Story” and  the infectious “Storms Coming”, there are plenty of different moods, shades, and textures to keep you listening, and keep you coming back. Falcon Down is definitely an artist to be uncovered and appreciated.
