Drop Electric is an experimental rock band based in Washington D.C. and NYC. Based in melody and distortion and deeply inspired by cinema, their live show is a combination of evocative music, unique vocals and narrative film.
In December 2010, they released their debut album, “Finding Color in the Ashes” at the Black Cat Mainstage in Washington, D.C. The album has been reviewed and or featured in The Washington Post, Mixtape Muse, Musigh, and a number of other fine publications.
In July 2012, Drop Electric signed with Pusher Music, a trailer house based in LA, joining a roster of artists that include Orbital, DJ Shadow and Crystal Method. The band are also headlining DCs Capitol Groove Fest this July and headlining the Black Cat on August 3 for DCs STPP Fest. They were chosen to play the 9:30 Club in November 2011 in honor of DC Week 2011. Drop Electric are currently promoting their new EP “Drop Electric Sampler Platter” and their stunning new music video for “Empire Trashed”.
Someone once wrote that music, “at its best, is a polite reminder of the limitations of language”. Album number two from this 6-piece Washington based, post rock experimentalists, shows a band very confident in their ability to stir emotions and build to vast musical heights in search of the boundaries that limit language.
The album opener “Empire Trashed” is just like an exploration sketched out through music. It has rises, falls and exciting moments, lulling peaceful stretches. This would be a vivid soundtrack for some epic, magnificently-shot movie. And it’s performed with a robust quality that many indie post-rockers don’t have. Varying between ethereality and expansiveness, gentleness and bombastity.
The second track, “Fighting At The Mall,” is even more impressive. The band brandishing delicate beauty and overwhelming power with equal aplomb. The dynamic oscillations are breathtaking and the track ends with the most crushingly cathartic, yet desperately gorgeous noise.
“Santo Domingo” broods and teases before launching into a perfect orchestral crescendo, where the crashing drums are so important, as they stamp over the wailing background voices and just about everything else, to lift the song to a soaring status.
“Slick Willy’s Last Waltz,” has contemplative moments which contrast with intense bursts of power. Tension and release are integral elements here, built-up in various ways, such as harmonic progressions using increasingly dischordal sounding harmony, and gradual build up of sounds and volume which erupt into a barrage of noise and then close into nothingness.
On “Drop Electric Sampler Platter,” Drop Electric, use structures put in place by the pioneers of post-rock, discarding in some instances however, the total angst, isolation and chilling emptiness so apparent within many other similar bands. Leaving pure, unadulterated beauty, power and aural chromaticity throughout the Ep.
