Doug Cash – singer, songwriter, musician, arranger, producer and performer. President of Pryor 2 What? Records and owner of Pryor 2 What? Music Publishing. Heavily influenced by Sly & the Family Stone, Beatles, James Brown, Led Zeppelin, Weather Report, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon and Yes, raised on Big band ( Basie, Ellington, Miller, Goodman) and bebop ( Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk ) Doug was groovin’ with the muse before he could walk. From Louis Armstrong to Kate Bush, his tastes and influences are wide and varied.
Doug Cash has recently released the gorgeous, lilting single, “Wouldn’t it be much easier v3” which recalls a fond romantic memory without a trace of sap or sickly-sweetness. It is a damn solid Cash original that, apart from his huskier well-rounded voice, would fit in well on one of the classic Beatles albums. Its loving theme with a melancholic edge showcases Cash’s expressive, stirring vocal register. And it is enhanced with the help of Sandra Dolores who also features on the track.
This is not a Valentine’s Day song, but its ambiance is certainly warm, balmy and lush – that is to say, romantic, with a question mark of contention. Whether Doug is singing the nuances of evocative lyrics or timeless, drippy verses, his delivery is consistently powerful, contemplative and sentimental, yet, more importantly, he never sounds insincere or premeditated. His songs are well-rendered and straightforward, so just about anybody can relate to it.
This is how they produced songs back in the day, without submerging and segmenting audiences into genres and subgenres of pure nothingness, where one person creates a song that only he or she could possibly appreciate, and then label it a genre unto itself- ridiculous, to say the least. Thank heavens Doug Cash is old school. He writes and produces music which can be universally enjoyed. And the key is all wrapped up in the melody. Doug knows melody, something the human ear captures over and above genre. Melody hits your ears and sinks right through to your heart. Genre needs to be digested and manipulated by the mind before it strikes home. It’s a no contest!
“Wouldn’t it be much easier v3” drips with melody, and so does just about every other Doug Cash song. Warmly and simply produced with organic-sounding instruments his tracks are very hard to resist…no matter what your preferred genre is!
