[fbshare type=”button”] [tweetmeme] It is not often that we review a cover band, as Jamsphere is almost strictly dedicated to original music, but Roxi & the Blues Cats is an exception as they do a bit of both and they do it rather well. If what we call British Bebop Blues, is your bag then you should have a Roxi album in your collection, or at least attend one of their many live performances.
The band is a five piece outfit that play a well-chosen variety of classic blues, jazz, and rock genres. The lead singer, Roxi, has a powerful and rich voice, with definitive old school style that may remind you at times of popular 70’s blues rock singer Maggie Bell (at the time named the British answer to Janis Joplin, but probably a bit more refined). The rest of the band is made up of the lead guitar playing Martin Ellins, bass picker Philip Plant, rhythm guitarist Rick Moxon and solid drummer Brian Johnson.
The Band has released a self-titled debut album which opens with the back alley strutting blues number “Blue Cats Strut”. A contagious bass line dominated track that Roxi picks up along the way, with her growling voice, and rock n’ rolls it to the end. “Lotus Elise Blues” grinds and jives along with the ever present bass riffing of Philip Plant, perfectly accompanied by Brain Johnson’s drumming.
Lead singer Roxi’s voice is most appreciated on “When baby Gets the Blues”, sultry, sure and intense. The cherry on top is most definitely the tasteful guitar solo produced by Martin Ellins.
Roxi & the Blue Cats can be heard on a variety of radio stations, especially Women in Music with Bluesletter Kim on KRVM 91.9 FM (Eugene, OR, USA) http://www.krvm.org, Blues Across The Marsh with DJ Kevin Beale on RomneyMarsh 87.8 FM http://www.romneymarsh.fm.
Ultimately Roxi & the Blue Cats have launched their profile on our Jamsphere Music Network platform where you can follow their music and live shows as well as get links to contact them or view heir official website.
